Reviews for San Mamiliano

Secluded with fabulous mountain views

A beautiful stone character house, tucked into the Umbrian hills. Divine views, from every window and hectares of land surrounding with wild flowers, natural landscape and privacy. A superb 14th century village a few doors from here, total population 14 people delights with the church bells ringing on the hour. Magical! There are fireplaces for the cool winters but a fabulous pool for the summers. Two apartments give space for four couples or more and two kitchens, if required are perfect for the keen chef. We ate at several local trattorias and osterias for not only super food but excellent prices. There are many varied ristorante to choose from. A memorable stay, a true Italian style villa with comfort, charm and character and unforgettable views! Sue and Glenn B. Hendra QLD Australia

Gorgeous villa!! Highly recommended

This was our second stay at this wonderful villa in hidden Umbria, and it was just as fantastic as we remembered it from our visit 2 years ago. The villa is beautiful and is kept really clean. We arrived really late but there was a food pack waiting for us so we just opened a bottle of wine and sat out on the terrace and relaxed straight away!!! The area is just stunning and we loved all the local restaurants. Also had a great day at La Somma for an impressive trek thorugh the mountains with good forward horses. We loved our stay, thank you Clare and Mario for your hospitality and good care. We will be back for a 3rd visit soon next year! With warmest regards, Stephanie K, The Netherlands.

Perfect peace

Is this the most perfectly peaceful place to holiday? It certainly seems like it. The idyllic beauty and quiet is awesome and wonderful to relax, read and dip into the pool. And then you are in the middle of what seems an endless series of amazing mountainside villages, to sightsee and eat wonderful food at ridiculously low prices. Yes, perfect. David S, London, UK.

Our best ever family holiday

I stayed here with my family for a memorable week in September. Everyone agreed it was one of the best holidays we have ever had. The property is beautiful, the views are quite stunning and the pool is a really lovely one. Cooking pizza in the poolside pizza oven was a lot of fun. The hosts are very helpful and the atmosphere extremely friendly . We shall be coming back this year. John M, Dorset, UK.

Absolute gem

San Mamiliano is a truly magical place, tucked away and surrounded by breathtaking views yet close enough to the numerous fascinating places to visit. We were completely charmed by its beauty and tranquility. The accommodation is extremely comfortable, well equipped and is delightfully furnished with understated elegance. Clare and Mario were the perfect hosts and could not have made us feel more welcome. They provided expert guidance and warm hospitality but were brilliant at observing our privacy and allowing us complete relaxation. The grounds and pool were beautiful and the perfect place to unwind on a warm summers day. We could not recommend it highly enough. Bernadette M, Bath, UK.

Great location for a holiday in Umbria

We had a lovely week at Clare and Mario's gorgeous house. Our apartment was great and the swimming pool a huge success with our family. Good location and hosts very helpful especially regarding restaurants. We also had a brilliant day white river rafting. Hope to come back one day soon. Ally P. UK.

Absolute bliss - Fabulous holiday

San Mamiliano deserves the highest praise. The house itself is delightful in every respect - well appointed, and very easy to live in. The location is stunningly beautiful in a very unspoilt and seemingly undiscovered bit of Umbria. We had gorgeous hot days which were perfectly complemented by wonderful swims in the fabulous clear and large pool overlooking the mountainside. The owners, Clare and Mario, are unobtrusive yet incredibly knowledgeable and helpful, their presence added a huge amount to our general enjoyment and discovery of our surroundings. This part of Umbria is well known for delicious cuisine, don't miss the Norcia wild boar and barley risotto with porcini and truffles! Wandering through the mediaeval streets of nearby Spoleto and riding in the foothills of the mountains were also high points. Many thanks San Mam, we will be back!! Louise O. Modbury, Devon, UK.

An inspirational place. The view is breathtaking

San Mamiliano is an inspirational place, mainly because of the setting. If you leave the window shutters open, you wake up to a vista looking down the valley, with wooded slopes stretching into the blue distance. By moonlight it is very beautiful. The poolside view is breathtaking. The beds are comfortable and the interior is pretty, with a proper oven, decent size fridge, washing machine and dishwasher. There is a spacious bathroom with shower and bath, and the bathroom too has a mountain view. Elegant Spoleto is 20 minutes away, a sophisticated place famous for its music festival, restaurants, shops, exhibitions, Roman aqueduct and towering fortress, but you can also follow easy or more adventurous walks from here overlooking the valley far below. The property belongs to the delightful Mario and Clare, who are respectively Italian and English. They gave us the warmest possible hospitality, including taking us on a fabulous horse-riding trek in the high hills, booking a rafting expedition and even on one occasion sourcing medicines for us when required. We loved our occasional relaxed chats over the two weeks. Our children loved the spacious pool, but for me the best part was the sheer beauty of it all. Sarah C, UK.

Beautiful house in wonderful surroundings

We enjoyed a great week of vacation in La Loggia. Clare and Mario welcomed us very nicely and explained many things to do in the region. The house offers everything you need, including a great swimming pool (bigger than what you would usually find in a holiday home like this). It really is 'a house with a view', offering wonderful sights all over the surrounding hills and villages. We were there in a week where it got very hot (over 40 degrees Celsius, as everywhere in Italy), but the fact that the house is on a hill and the thick walls kept it bearable. We would definitely recommend the property to friends and would like to come back one time! Erwin V, The Netherlands.

A very attractive house set in a peaceful setting

Having read Clare's book "Chickens eat pasta" it was all the more exciting to visit San Mamiliano. A comfortable place to stay, very clean and tidy. Essentials like sugar and olive oil, washing up liquid etc already there, so sensible. Very quiet and enjoyed the company of Clare and Mario very much. They were very attentive and able to tell us where to visit. Clare also arranged a delightful 3 hour horse ride in the mountains above Spoleto with stunning views. The swimming pool is beautiful and large and is always spotless. BBQ available and outdoor tables available to enjoy eating outside. I was very refreshed when I left and sad to go. Anthea P, Chichester, UK.

Excellent getaway!

San Mamiliano is an Italian Mountain retreat of the most sublime character with a fantastic view of the surrounding mountains and valley vistas. Local Italian fare is delightful and honest with fine local varietal wines to complement any meal. With her excellent knowledge of the area our hostess made every day an adventure! Definitely would recommend this excellent getaway for people weary of city life. Alan H, Missoula, USA.

Best kept secret in Umbria

We have visited twice, and still believe that this little gem is the best kept secret in Umbria. The house is part of the oldest inhabited village in Umbria, and totally unspoiled. Stunning views down through the mountains, super walks, and clean crisp air. Only minutes from the main highways, and further exploration of the beautiful surrounding region. Plenty of good eateries in the surrounding towns and villages, and good local wines make for an enjoyable, relaxing holiday. In summer it's hard to beat just relaxing around the large pool, and vine covered outdoor eating area! David N. Noosa, Australia.

What a lovely place!!

The house is beautiful, walls lovely and thick guaranteeing cool. The pool is great with views over the stunning valley . We went to a couple of great local restaurants recommended by Clare and Mario. They were really kind and helpful. We also went for a lovely evening in Spoleto. We loved visiting the Abbazia San Pietro in Valle, near Ferentillo.. In June the wild flowers and butterflies were spectacular. With a glass of lovely local wine, the lovely view, the birdsong, happy humming from the bees and heavenly scent as you walk over the wild marjoram this is a feast for all the senses!! For nature lovers look out for the hoopooes.. We had a fantastic time. If you want a dreamy peaceful holiday come here! I will come back! Veronique Charriere, Paris

Beautiful site: the perfect place to slow down

This was not our first vacation in Italy, but this lovely home with many unique features was a great base to discover medieval towns and villages. It's in a small village just a few miles from a highway going to Spoleto, about 10 miles away, and Assisi. Some days we planned walks in the hills, looking for wild asparagus, enjoying mountains flowers. A riding stable nearby offers day rides into the mountains, with luscious lunch. A highlight of our stay was a cooking lesson with a local chef who taught us how to make ravioli. We plan to come back in the fall to see the colors of autumn and sample new wine and the local olive oil. Helene B, Missoula, USA

An ideal place to chill out and enjoy the stunning scenery

This was my first visit to San Mamiliano and I absolutely loved it. It is the ideal place to chill out and enjoy the stunning scenery. Although hidden away up winding country lanes it is close to good local restaurants and Spoleto. The sound of birdsong is wonderful, the views breathtaking and there were so many beautiful butterflies in the pretty garden.
The villa itself is spacious, comfortable and full of rural charm. Clare and Mario are the perfect hosts and ensured that all our needs were taken care of. I definitely want to visit again! Cari Aplin, Wells, UK.

Un posto delizioso

Un posto delizioso, un gioiello delle montagne umbre. Immerso nella natura San Mamiliano ha un’atmosfera unica che permette a spirito e mente di rigenerarsi. Consigliato caldamente! Tommaso C. Bologna, Italy.
